WHO, Asia-Europe Foundation and Japan deliver critical equipment to strengthen hospital care in Ukraine

26 May 2026

WHO, together with the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and the Government of Japan, provided water heaters, water storage tanks and equipment for the safe management of hazardous medical waste to 24 hospitals in Ukraine’s frontline regions. Five hospitals also received modern laundry and drying equipment. This support is part of WHO’s effort to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s health system during the war, particularly in frontline and heavily affected regions.

Hospitals across Ukraine continue to operate under immense pressure – from high patient loads to ongoing infrastructure challenges. The provision of materials, equipment and training will help to ensure uninterrupted access to essential, life-saving health services. The latest delivery will support compliance with hygiene standards, instrument sterilization, infection prevention and safe delivery of medical procedures. It will also enable hospitals to continue operating even during prolonged disruptions to utility services.

“This support reflects our commitment to strengthening the resilience of essential public services in times of crisis. Access to water, sanitation and hygiene is fundamental to health security and the uninterrupted functioning of hospitals, especially in frontline regions. We are pleased to support the WHO Country Office in Ukraine so that health facilities can continue to operate safely and protect both patients and health workers in extremely challenging conditions,” said Ambassador Beata Stoczyńska, Executive Director of ASEF.
